Year 13 Will finishes joint 12th out of 94 players at the Junior Open Golf Championships in Spain

General

Huge congratulations to Year 13 Will who finished joint 12th out of 94 players at the Junior Open Golf Championships in Spain.

The competition was played on two separate courses and consisted of four games, two on each course. A cut was then made of the top 42 players, using their two best scores. Will got off to a flying start on day one, on the La Canada having to deal with high winds and rain, finishing with a round of 75, 1 over par.

His first round on the more demanding course the Alcaidesa which is set in the Alcaidesa mountains proved to be a tough challenge in winds over 20mph and intermittent rain. Will finished his round strong, scoring a birdie and an eagle on the 16th and 17th holes rounding off with a par on the 18th. He finished with a commendable 78, 4 over par.

Will had two more rounds to ensure he made the cut the top 42 players out of 94 finalists. At this point Will was placed in 22nd position.

Will made his move on his next round on Alcaidesa, although again having to deal with high winds and rain on the mountain side, occasionally the sun did shine! To ensure he made the cut, he pushed as hard as he could to achieve five birdies and an eagle on the 17th finishing very strong with a score of 73, 1 under par. His place in the final was now secured, finishing his first rounds in 13th position.

The final play-off round played at Alcaidesa was covered by Sky Sports and was an intense and very competitive affair. Will started well scoring a birdie on the first hole and maintained good momentum for the first nine holes. A birdie on the 8th hole, 210 yards in a wind of 25mph driving the hole within 12 inches kept Will’s spirits up in an intense game. The second nine holes proved difficult as the wind picked up, however, a strong finish secured a score of 78, 4 over par to finish in joint 12th position for the overall competition.

Will, at the Gala dinner received his trophy for his position from Sky pundit, Nick Dougherty. We look forward to seeing all the Sky footage when it's broadcast in the coming months.
