Reception at The Croft

We warmly welcome you to Reception at the Croft, Tranby - where your child will take those important first steps into Primary School. Whether your child has been with us since Pre-School or is new to the Tranby family, we are eager to embark on this next phase of their educational journey together, where we don't just meet expectations - we exceed them.

Our Reception pupils consistently outperform national averages:

100% of children achieve or surpass their expected progress by the end of the year.

Our experienced teachers are dedicated to creating a stimulating and supportive environment where your child will truly thrive.

Unlike many local primary schools, where class sizes can reach 28–30 children, our small Reception classes - never exceeding 16 - ensure each child receives the individual attention they need. This close support allows us to nurture curiosity, build confidence, and give every child a strong educatioonal foundation that prepares them for the transition into Prep School.

If you are looking for the best primary school in Hull and East Yorkshire for your child, we would love to welcome you for a visit. Come and see for yourself the extensive opportunites, unmatched pastoral care and outstanding facilities available to your child.

The Croft Reception EYFS approach

When it comes to starting primary school, it's vital to create the right environment so that children feel happy and secure walking through the doors each morning.

Striking the perfect balance of challenged yet confident, independent, yet supported is important when it comes to children developing a love of learning and school itself.

This is where our fully qualified and subject specialist teachers make the world of difference...

Specialist teachers from reception

Children are taught by subject specialists in Sports and Music from Reception. Because they are experts in their fields, these teachers can spot a spark of talent or potential early on and nurture it in ways tailored to that specific discipline.

In addition, pupils begin their first steps in language learning through song, laying the foundation for a seamless progression to language lessons with Tranby Senior School teachers in Year 1.

The benefits of having Senior School teachers on the Prep School lesson timetable are boundless. These teachers have invaluable knowledge and experience, not only of their subject, but of tailoring their methods to teaching children of all ages.

They truly know how to bring the best out in every child.

They know when children can be pushed a little further out of their comfort zone and when they need a gentler approach. This knowledge and experience is invaluable in propelling children forward in the early years of their education.

academic excellence from the moment your child starts primary school

For our Reception children, academic excellence means more than just achieving the baseline. The work we do means we consistenly achieve beyond national averages and expecations, giving children a headstart as they work through the different key stages of their education.

In 2025:

100% Of Tranby pupils achieved expected or exceeding in Maths by the end of Year 1

100% Of Tranby children passed the Y1 national phonics screening test

When you compare this to the national average of 80%, it is clear that the work we do in our small classes has a huge impact.

supporting busy parents with our extended day provision

At Tranby, we know modern family life doesn’t fit the old school model, with many parents working full time and needing flexibility. That’s why we created Extended Day – free until 16:45 for Reception to Year 6. It’s not just childcare, but a seventh lesson of the day, filled with active, creative and academic opportunities led by our brilliant staff.

Beyond that, for a small charge, we offer wraparound care until 18:00, plus Morning Care from 07:30, making family life easier while giving pupils even more chances to thrive.

Nestled in the West Hull village of Anlaby, Tranby is surrounded by acres of clean, green space and fresh air.

Children can join our Preschool from age 2, followed by the transition to Primary School in our Reception setting. They then continue into Prep School, Secondary School and Sixth Form, making the journey seamless for your child. Each stage of school offers unrivalled learning opportunities; Tranby is the perfect place for your child to succeed on their educational journey.

We would love to learn more about your little one, and we warmly invite you to contact our Registrar, Sharon McEwan to book a visit at a time to suit you: sharon.mcewan@tranby.org.uk or 01482 657016.

Following the visit and registration, your child will be invited into The Croft for a taster session, where they will meet and play with likeminded children, and enjoy a wonderful couple of hours with our staff.

We understand starting school is a big step for little feet. Throughout June - prior to starting Reception in the September - your child will join us in four morning sessions to ensure a smooth and happy transition when their big day comes. This helps to ensure their first day is an exciting one for them.

We offer places to children who will thrive at Tranby, and where we are confident we can meet their needs and propel them academically, socially and personally. We cant wait to welcome you to Reception at The Croft, Tranby - where academic excellence is only the beginning.
