Sixth Form FAQs

Welcome to Tranby Sixth - our innovative, affordable sixth form based in Anlaby, near Hull.

Here, you’ll find answers to the most common questions students and families ask about our academic offer, daily life, fees, transport, and how to apply.

Academic programme

How many subjects can I study?

You can choose up to three subjects, from our range of 31 A Level and BTEC options.

Can I do an EPQ?

Yes, you can.

An Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a research-based project, on a topic of the pupil's choosing, that equates to half an A Level. Many universities lower the grade requirement for courses based on a pupil's EPQ. For example, if a university originally required AAB grades for entry, they might reduce this to ABB or BBB for a pupil who has successfully completed an EPQ, recognising the additional skills and effort involved in the qualification. This is because the EPQ demonstrates important academic skills such as research, time management, and independent study, which are invaluable at university level.

Can I do a fourth subject?

Yes, although this is subject to an additional fee. However, for most pupils we recommend focusing on three subjects.

Can I mix A Levels and BTECs?

Yes. We’ll discuss your subject choices as part of the application process.

What is the typical class size?

In 2025/26 we expect class sizes to average around eight or ten, allowing for tailored teaching and lively debate and collaboration.

Will I get careers advice?

Yes - Tranby is renowned for its outstanding careers provision and you will benefit greatly from this.

What are the teachers at Tranby like?

Tranby Sixth is focused on developing your confidence and independence. In lessons, your teachers will be helping you to develop those skills: lessons will be structured around debate and critical thinking, not learning by rote. Our sixth formers thrive in our environment of mutual respect, and your teachers will support you every step of the way in developing intellectual curiosity. They are proud of what our pupiis achieve, and will celebrate your successes every step of the way.

What if I struggle with my courses?

We closely monitor your academic progress and intervene early if you start to struggle. Parents and guardians are kept in the loop with fortnightly progress reports, and study periods will take place in school to help you get back on track. Our approach is proactive, not reactive, and no one is left to fall behind. We will never remove you from a course you want to stay on; we work with you to ensure you grasp the concepts and become subject specialists in your own right.

Life in the Sixth Form

Can I leave school during the day?

Yes, you can leave the site at any time when you don’t have timetabled sessions. We’ll ask you to sign in and out so we know where you are.

Can I stay on site for the full day if I want?

Yes, and you have full use of the Sixth Form common areas and the library.

Do I have to wear a school uniform?

To reflect your increasing independence and autonomy, there is no uniform – instead, we ask that you wear “business casual” clothing.

.“Business casual” means workwear that would be appropriate in a relaxed office environment. From example, it might include reasonably smart trousers or a skirt with a shirt, plus a jumper or a blazer; a tailored dress with or without a jacket, a tailored jumpsuit, etc. Footwear should be a shoe or smart trainer appropriate to the outfit.

Shorts, leisure wear, any clothing which is very casual in style, or any items which are ripped, dirty or heavily logo-ed are not appropriate.

Do I need a sports kit?

Only if you represent the school in matches or competitions. Some team kit will be provided.

Is lunch available on site?

Yes, a range of hot and cold food is available in the school dining hall catering to a range of dietary requirements.

Enrichment and co-curricular activities

Can I do sport?

A weekly sports session is included in the standard programme for all students. If you would like to do more, or make use of the gym, we can add these as an extra. (BTEC Sport students have unlimited sport and gym access as part of the standard fee.)

Can I do any co-curricular activities?

Yes, some of which may be subject to costs. This will vary for different activities, to reflect the costs of running them.

Can I do work experience or volunteering?

Yes, we support students in finding and organising placements. Volunteering is encouraged as part of personal development.

Admissions and applying

Do I need to pass an exam or interview?

We’ll invite you in for a short interview, and we will also review your predicted grades and a reference from your current school.

Will the costs increase in the second year?

There may be a small increase in cost in line with inflation and the broader school standard annual fee increase, but this amount is minimal.

Which A Level subjects should I choose?

This is a very personal decision, but as a general rule, choose the subjects you love and are good at. If you have a clear university course or career in mind, do check any subject requirements in advance – but remember that if you don’t enjoy the required subject, you probably won’t enjoy your chosen pathway. Play to your strengths!

What is an HMC school?

Tranby is a member of HMC. HMC is a kitemark of global quality, innovation and excellence in education. HMC schools are world-leading independent schools located in the British Isles and across the globe.

Why should I choose Tranby Sixth?

Our Sixth Form is tailored to what matters most – helping you to achieve academic success in the subjects you love. Our programme gives you independence and room to grow, alongside vital pastoral and careers support. You can choose to take on extra subjects and activities, or you can focus on your selected subjects, as you look ahead to university and beyond. We give you the freedom to choose, without compromising on academic learning.

Why is your sixth form so cheap, compared to other independent schools?

At its core, sixth form is about achieving the academic results that will unlock the next stage of your life. Our programme is firmly focused on helping you to achieve your best in your chosen subjects. By removing “extras” that you might not use, we can reduce the fee that we charge.

If you do want to do more, you can add activities and subjects. We’ll only charge you for what you choose.

When should I apply?

For 2026, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can arrange a visit and a time for your assessment interview. The sooner you get in touch, the sooner we can secure your preferred subjects.
