classics Trip to Italy 2024

Senior and Sixth Form

The Classics trip to Italy consisting of 46 pupils across Year 7 - 10 and 6 staff departed school at 01:00 on Friday 22 March and returned the following Wednesday.
On day one, the pupils went to Vatican City and saw the stunning St Peter's Square before heading back to their lovely hotel - the Villa Rosa. On the second day, the staff and pupils clocked up a very impressive 18km of walking, seeing the Forum, Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona where they had the most amazing ice cream (much deserved after all that walking!) Lunch was at T-Bone steakhouse where they were all glad of a sit down in an air conditioned restaurant. Even in March, the temperature got up to 23o  so everyone made sure they had plenty of water and suncream.
Sunday was Palm Sunday and the local church gave some of their palm leaves. Then it was time to leave Rome and head down to Sorrento, stopping at Hadrian's Villa along the way.

Once everyone arrived at Hotel Spicy in Sorrento, the staff surprised the pupils with a pizza party in honour of Charlie's 12th birthday! We hope you had the most wonderful Birthday, Charlie.

The next day it was time for a trip to beautiful Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that never ceases to amaze. Here pupils saw the House of Caecilius, something they study in their Latin textbooks. Lunch was in a Wild West Saloon which helped to refuel everyone's energy before going up Vesuvius. It was a lovely clear day, so they could see all the way over the bay of Naples. On the final day it began to rain unfortunately, but the group still enjoyed their visit to Herculaneum. This was covered in mud rather than ash during the Eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, so the colours of the mosaics and paintings are more vivid than the ones in Pompeii. The trip to Herculaneum was the final stop before heading home.

Throughout the trip, pupils were complimented on their behaviour and both hotels said they would be delighted to host us again. They represented Tranby perfectly, as we knew they would.
We would like to say thank you to the staff who accompanied the trip. These trips are only possible when we have a wonderful team to support and you made a truly fantastic team.

The trip will run again at Easter 2026 for pupils who will be in Years 7 to 10 during the 2025-26 academic year.
