Year 12 students visit UCAS Discovery exhibition

General

Last week, students in Year 12 attended the UCAS discovery exhibition at the University of Hull which brought experts together to help shortlist their options in preparation for life after Tranby.

Students listened to live talks by experts on everything from managing the UCAS Hub, understanding student finance, how to make their application stand out along with a range of courses to consider. They had the opportunity to discuss courses and entry requirements with representatives from the more than 70 institutions which were represented there and a number of students also accessed subject talks about Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Medicine which were running in the Brynmor Jones Library.

Head of Sixth Form, Annabel Robinson said ''The UCAS event at Hull University was incredibly useful for all of our students, whether they were intending to apply for university or not. It gave everyone a real insight into what universities expect and the chance to chat through entry criteria, city living and anything else the students wanted to ask. Higher Apprenticeship providers and careers stalls were also utilised and inundated with queries and questions. Students left with a plethora of  freebies, a fountain of knowledge and a drive and motivation to kickstart their applications and focus on their futures.''

Careers Coordinator, Jo Harding said ''It was a pleasure to work with our Year 12s during last week’s PSHE morning. Periods 1 and 2 saw them involved in a comprehensive introduction to the UCAS application process delivered by Mr O’Brien-Blake. They then attended the UCAS Discovery Event. They got a lot from the morning’s activities and I am sure they have some food for thought about the applications they will make during next term.''

Head Girl, Imogen said ''As a Sixth Form we were given an enriching experience in which we could talk to professionals, gaining valuable information about courses. Hull University hosted the convention where hundreds of universities were easily accessible through stalls and academic talks. Exploring not only Hull’s campus but also the variety of options available to us in the future was enlightening and informative. Talking directly to admissions staff or to current students allowed for a personal insight into life at university – something which is not achieved when looking at websites. Specific academic talks were also being held in the library, for an assortment of subjects including Chemistry, Astrophysics, American History etc. These allowed for personal communication about applications, study and life after certain courses, giving us an overall comprehension of options. Personally, the talk on Medicine I attended gave me reassurance and information on the entrance exams. The day was encapsulated as we began to fill out our UCAS forms, led through the process by Mr O’Brien-Blake, introducing us to the world of higher education application. The experience was enriching and evoked urgency and excitement towards decisions for our futures.''
