Building Futures, Not Blueprints: The Tranby Pre-Senior Baccalaureate

Building Futures, Not Blueprints: The Tranby Pre-Senior Baccalaureate

At Tranby, we believe that education should go beyond textbooks and exam results. We are proud to introduce the Tranby Pre-Senior Baccalaureate (PSB) to our curriculum, an innovative framework designed to prepare children not just for academic success but for life beyond the classroom.

The PSB represents a seismic shift in how we approach education, focusing on the development of well-rounded individuals who are equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern world.

Why the PSB

For too long, the education system has placed an outsized emphasis on exam results, creating an environment where students are trained to perform rather than grow. This traditional approach often leaves students ill-prepared for the real world, where success depends not only on knowledge but on the ability to adapt, collaborate, and think critically. This is especially true of children who may excel in creativity, leadership, or practical skills but find these talents overlooked in an exam-driven environment.
Businesses across the globe have recognised this gap, with many now investing in programs to teach employees essential skills that should have been nurtured during their school years. The PSB challenges this outdated model, fostering the personal and professional qualities that truly matter in life: resilience, self-awareness, confidence, and an eagerness to learn.

Bringing Out the Best in Children: The Tranby Way

At Tranby, we want to be different. We reject the idea that success should be measured solely on league table results and strive to bring the very best out in every child, whether they excel academically or need a little more encouragement. We are aware of our responsibility to develop the whole child and shape them into compassionate, capable individuals who are ready to face interviews, thrive in diverse workplaces, and navigate the challenges of life with confidence and character.
Of course, they should have a competitive edge and push themselves to do their very best, but we ensure this is encouraged in a way that promotes their mental wellbeing, fosters confidence, and never pressures them at the cost of their overall happiness and development.

What is The Tranby PSB

The Pre-Senior Baccalaureate (PSB) was established in 2012 to address the limitations of exam-centric education. Initially supported by four schools, it has grown to include over 50 schools and is now part of The Learning Skills Trust (LST), a charity dedicated to enriching education in meaningful ways. At its core, the PSB aims to:

  • Foster essential skills like communication, collaboration, leadership, and critical thinking.
  • Encourage students to take ownership of their learning through “I can” statements, promoting self-assessment, reflection and accountability.
  • Provide a well-rounded education that prepares pupils for the challenges of senior school and beyond.

The Six Core Skills

The PSB framework emphasises six core skills that underpin lifelong learning and personal development:

  1. Leadership
  2. Resilience
  3. Collaboration
  4. Self-awareness
  5. Communication
  6. Problem-solving

These skills are seamlessly integrated into our teaching and assessment, ensuring that students not only acquire knowledge but also develop the habits of learning that will serve them for life.

How It Works at Tranby

We have the freedom to adapt the PSB framework to align with our school’s ethos: The Tranby Way.
Here are some highlights:

  1. Pre-Senior Project Qualification: Every student undertakes a project that allows them to deep-dive into a subject of interest while honing both subject-specific and core skills.
  2. “I Can” Statements: These encourage students to shift from a teacher-led “you can” mindset to a self-directed “I can” approach, fostering independence and responsibility.
  3. Certificates of Achievement: At the end of Year 6, students receive certificates celebrating their accomplishments, providing a personal record that supports their transition to senior school.

A Proven Approach

Research shows that PSB students demonstrate a more positive attitude toward learning, are more resilient, and are more engaged than their peers in traditional education models.
By focusing on holistic development, the PSB equips our students with the skills and mindset needed to thrive academically, socially, and professionally.
