Law Mooting Competition for Tranby Sixth Form

Law Mooting Competition for Tranby Sixth Form

General

On Friday, Sixth Form students competed in a Mock Trial at The University of Hull.

Mooting is the verbal presentation of a legal case or issue against an opposing counsel. When mooting, the issues, and the procedure remain as close to a real case as possible and entrants present their submissions in front of a Judge. It is the closest experience to appearing before the Court of Appeal that a student can have.

Students were required to argue either as appellants, appealing a court decision, or respondents, responding to the appeal. They had to show understanding of the law, citing up to three relevant cases to support their argument. They were judged on five categories, including presentation, persuasion and creativity. The Y12 students, Aidan, Archie and Olivia were well-prepared and argued persuasively, with one out of the two teams winning the case. They missed out on the overall Y12 competition but Olivia won an individual prize. Olivia deserves special recognition after stepping in at the last minute for a student who was absent due to covid. The Y13 students, Mia, Etienne and Joyce were exceptional, not only winning their case but also walking away as winners of the overall Y13 competition.

Well done to everyone.
