Year 9 Languages Day

Year 9 Languages Day

General

This week, pupils in Year 9 took a day off timetable to enjoy Languages Day in preparation for entering Year 10. Pupils can choose from French, German Latin and Spanish to study at GCSE.

They learnt that the study of foreign languages not only broadens their perspectives of the world, but also imparts a more profound understanding of their own culture. Exposure to cultures with long histories builds a greater sense of the past within one's own culture as well.

The day started with an introduction to languages by Mrs Pick in the Radcliffe Hall followed by the benefits of learning Latin and careers in languages with Careers Coordinator, Mrs Harding. Pupils enjoyed a variety of activities including learning Maori, Round the World in 80 clues, a treasure hunt and a Euro Quiz.

French teacher, Mrs Pick said ''Our Year 9 pupils participated fully in all that the day had to offer. I very much hope that they enjoyed the day and that it gave them some food for thought as they consider their GCSE option choices. I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the staff and pupils who were involved and helped to make the day a success.''

We also launched the first issue of The Tranby Linguist, created to celebrate the diversity of languages and cultures across the school, and to offer an insight into aspects of the teaching of languages within Tranby. This first edition focuses primarily on the Senior School and consists of submissions from pupils, items of interest written by colleagues, and issues of language pedagogy. We hope that you enjoy reading the contents and that you find the experience informative, enriching and thought-provoking.
