Promoting Cultural Awareness and Inclusivity: PSHE Multicultural Day at Tranby

General

The Tranby community is a rich tapestry of different backgrounds. To celebrate this, we devoted this morning to exploring our staff and pupils’ cultural heritage. For this event, around 20 members of staff and pupils prepared presentations regarding backgrounds ranging from just over the border in Scotland, across Europe and into the Americas, Asia and Africa. Other pupils engaged with them to find out more about their peers. We were delighted to welcome Kamlesh Kaur who ran a workshop on Indian dance which gave an opportunity for pupils to try the dancing for themselves and to dress in saris and bindis.

We also welcomed Siddi from the Twelve Tribes of Yorkshire who showed how African-Caribbean cultures’ fusion with American and European cultures gave rise to hip hop dance, the importance of interfaith tolerance for peace and harmony, the twinning of Hull with Freetown since 1979 and, as Hull is currently the Maritime City of Yorkshire, is sharing some stories about African and Caribbean seafaring.

Finally, we were delighted to welcome Stella and Chiedu from Black Heritage Hull who spoke to pupils on cultural identity and the various themes that exist within both celebrating our cultural identity, and what societal factors in life have an impact on the shaping of our cultural identity.
