History brought to life for Year 4 at Gainsborough Old Hall

General

Year 4’s topic on the Tudors was brought to life with a fascinating day at the impressive Gainsborough Old Hall, a remarkable survival of an urban manor house in Lincolnshire. It was built for Sir Thomas Burgh between the 1460s and 1490s. Henry 8th and his then wife Catherine Howard stayed in 1541 for three days. Pupils learnt about the running of the house and the role of the servants, had a glimpse into Tudor society and dressed up and took part in their very own Tudor banquet. They toured the impressive house, with one of the best surviving Tudor kitchens and Great Halls in the country and the facts and stories they learnt were very inspiring.

We were incredibly proud of the impeccable behaviour our Year 4’s displayed, a fact which did not go unnoticed. The tour guides praised the children for their diligent immersion in the activities, the enthusiasm they showed and the insightful questions they asked.

The children embraced the day, commenting, how it was “an amazing trip” and “we didn’t want the day to end.”

Humanities lead and Year 4 teacher Mrs Crossland said, “At Tranby we inspire subject passion and bringing history to life through inspirational visits allows children to interact with the past and brings their learning to life.”
