Combination of pupils and parents is a winning formula at the Hull Spanish and Latin American Society's quiz night.

General

Before half term, a team representing Tranby participated in the Hull Spanish and Latin American Society’s quiz night in Cottingham. Contestants had to name singers from music clips and identify famous people and monuments or natural wonders from across the Spanish-speaking world. Following a break for tapas, there was a general knowledge quiz on Spain and Central and South America – we now all know how long the River Ebro is in Spain! Our team enjoyed a winning streak and won a number of prizes, including some curiously named ‘Moctezuma’s Revenge’ (dark chocolate!). But of course on evenings like this the fun element is much more important than the competition and it was great to mix with other people who share the same passion for this wonderful language and culture. A great evening was had by all.

This event followed on from last November’s showing of José Luis Cuerda’s ‘La lengua de la mariposa’, a film about life in Galician Spain prior to the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936, which was held in the Drawing Room at Tranby. More events are being planned. If you have an interest in Spanish or the Spanish-speaking world and would like to know more about the Society please contact Mr Stephenson, Head of Languages and Committee Member, on gordon.stephenson@tranby.org.uk. There is also a recently created Facebook group called ‘Hull Spanish and Latin American Society’ which you would be welcome to join. It is a private group administered by Mr Stephenson, and is a forum for discussion of all things Spanish. Please note that there are three questions to answer before membership is approved!
