Year 8 Technology Day

Year 8 Technology Day

General

Year 8 Technology day is an opportunity for all the Year 8 pupils to have a day off timetable to focus on the theme of sustainability. Pupils were divided in to three groups and after an introduction from Head of Technology and Art, Mrs Wallis, talking about the meaning of sustainability, they headed off to their activity. The activities were focused in the three areas of Technology- including Art, DT and Food & Nutrition.

Within each of the activities, the focus remained on sustainability. Specifically in Art they create a piece of collaborative work that will be displayed within the school community, something that lasts over time and made from collaged magazine pieces that would ordinarily have ended up in the bin. Pupils also received a postcard of the art made during the day once the work had been mounted in its permanent home within school. In DT the pupils created a tealight holder using sustainable materials, specifically FSC timber and recycled glass. In Food & Nutrition pupils made and decorated seasonal cake pops using fairtrade and organic ingredients. Mrs East, Head of Food & Nutrition, invited Deborah Vidal a professional cake decorator from 'Bake That and Party' based in Leconfield. Deborah worked with all the pupils demonstrating technique, process and helped Mrs East and the pupils produce high-quality confectionery.

After the activities, pupils were welcomed to the Radcliffe Hall to enjoy a welcome hot chocolate and enjoy further products produced in Food and Nutrition. A fabulous day was had by all; Will in Year 8 said 'It had been his best day at Tranby so far'. Pupils had the opportunity to take home with them a fabulous cake pop that they'd made during the session plus their tealight holder made in DT.
