Welcome to the Tranby Medical Academy

At Tranby, we are committed to nurturing ambition and opening doors for students with aspirations to enter the medical professions. The Tranby Medical Academy runs every Friday lunchtime, giving aspiring doctors, dentists, vets, and others interested in medical careers a dedicated space to explore their passions, build knowledge, and gain valuable preparation for university applications.

Inspiring Future Medics

The Academy was founded to fill a gap for students keen to pursue careers in medicine and related fields. What began as a small initiative has grown rapidly, and today there is strong interest across Years 11, 12, and 13. Students benefit from guidance, hands-on practice, and unique opportunities designed to spark curiosity and build confidence.

What Happens at the Tranby Medical Academy?

The sessions are varied, practical, and tailored to the needs of those preparing for highly competitive courses. Activities include:

  • Medical interview preparation
  • UCAT practice and guidance
  • Ethical debates – vital for developing interview skills
  • Dissections (such as lambs’ brains, lambs’ heads, and pigs’ uteri - sourced from local Halal butchers)
  • Suturing practice
  • Talks from guest speakers such as Tranby alumna Maisie, currently studying Medicine at Newcastle University, who returned to share her journey in 2024
  • Work experience advice and support
  • Personal statement guidance – with a focus on the attributes universities look for

Growing the Tranby Medical Academy Year on Year

The academy is open to all pupils across the Senior School, with several Sixth Formers actively preparing for applications to medical school in 2026.

The pupils are gaining so much from the Academy, which is taught by passionate subject specialist Miss Marshall, a graduate of Royal Holloway, University of London. Her experience and expertise bring real-world insight to the sessions, inspiring students and providing them with the guidance they need to pursue careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and other medical fields.
