Girls X-Elle BMXing Days at the National Cycling Centre

As part of our commitment to providing an “Education with Character,” students from a range of United Learning schools, including Tranby, recently participated in the Girls X-Elle BMXing Days at the prestigious National Cycling Centre through Access Sport. This initiative reflects our dedication to offering students holistic educational experiences that build resilience, challenge barriers, and inspire lifelong skills.

Aims of the Event
The Girls X-Elle BMXing Days aimed to:

  • Promote gender equality in sports by encouraging girls to explore non-traditional sporting activities, such as track cycling and BMXing.
  • Offer students access to new environments and skill-building opportunities that extend beyond the regular school curriculum.
  • Support holistic development by challenging students to overcome obstacles and develop resilience, teamwork, and confidence in a supportive environment.

A Day to Remember
Held at the National Cycling Centre, the programme provided the girls with:

  • Access to world-class facilities and coaching in BMXing and track cycling, with all equipment supplied free of charge.

  • Sessions led by expert coaches who tailored activities to individual skill levels, ensuring inclusivity and enjoyment for all participants.
  • A unique opportunity to watch GB men’s track cycling team in action, coached by the legendary Sir Jason Kenny.

The high-profile setting offered an inspiring backdrop, motivating participants to challenge themselves and experience adrenaline-fueled activities that many had never encountered before.

Making an Impact
The X-Elle programme is designed to tackle the barriers girls face in accessing sports, particularly within a school context. Through these sessions:

  • Students gained confidence and new skills.
  • Teachers were supported in developing long-term strategies to encourage female participation in sports.
  • Schools played a pivotal role in challenging misconceptions about girls in sports, providing a platform for students to thrive and build resilience.
  • The inclusive approach empowered girls to work at their own pace while overcoming challenges within their peer groups.

Voices from the Day
Our team were impressed with how the day “challenged the girls but within a supportive environment that they really enjoyed” and our students said the day was “Adrenaline-fueled and really enjoyable.”
Rob Hawker from Access Sport said “The value of these experiences lies in placing the girls in challenging environments and watching them show resilience and positivity. Working with United Learning has allowed us to support more young people in accessing greater opportunities.”

A Brighter Future for Girls in Sport

The Girls X-Elle BMXing Days have set a benchmark for challenging gender stereotypes and encouraging more girls to embrace sports. Through initiatives like this, United Learning is proud to lead the way in creating a brighter future for female athletes, one enriching experience at a time.
