Debbie Wastling returns to Tranby to deliver an exciting workshop and reconnect with old school friends
Following an exciting workshop as part of senior school English studies last week, we asked one of our Upper Sixth students, Phoebe, to write about the experience for this news story. And we must say, Phoebe’s articulation of the experience and subject matter reads as if written by an already accomplished author!
“On Wednesday last week, Tranby was delighted to be visited by author and alumna, Debbie Wastling who delivered a workshop in crafting creative writing pieces to a group of senior school students. This workshop involved the students drafting their own piece of flash fiction on one of three themes: ‘There was a ring in the teacup’, ‘Walking on the rim of the galaxy’ or ‘wildfire’. The pupils, who ranged from Years 10 to 13, were then invited to share their stories, and receive feedback from the group. In doing so, they were all offered a fascinating insight into one another’s creative minds, able to appreciate both their own work and that of their peers with new eyes. While some stories were flowing prose, others took poetic forms, and others were only a few sentences long, but all appreciated the feedback that Ms. Wastling was able to offer. Inspiring these young people to continue with their written endeavors was an invaluable service that we’re sure they will value for many years to come.”
Thank you to Phoebe for this wonderfully written explanation of the workshop.
Debbie, a proud alumna of what was then Hull High School for Girls, returned to Tranby as a teacher after graduating. She is now an accomplished author residing in Los Angeles. Originally from Hull, she has made significant strides in her literary career. Known for her engaging storytelling and unique perspective, Debbie has captivated readers with her works that often draw inspiration from her roots in Hull. We very much appreciate her taking time out of her trip home to deliver this wonderful workshop to our captivated students.
It was also a great pleasure the welcome Debbie and several of her school friends back to Tranby on Saturday the 12th of October where members of the class of ’75 took a trip down memory lane during their school reunion! Of course, when the ladies last studied in these classrooms and ran amuck in the halls, the school was called Hull High School for Girls before the merger with Hull Grammar School when we became Hull Collegiate, followed later by Tranby.
Whilst the name may have changed over the years, the foundations of what make Tranby such a remarkable school have never wavered. Our goal is and will always be to nurture potential, inspire subject passion and celebrate talent in every student that comes through our doors.
We’re thrilled that Debbie and her friends returned to their old school to look through photographs and reminisce about their happy times as part of our history.
We hope to welcome you back again soon ladies!
