GB Wheelchair Rugby Athlete Martin Norris Visits Tranby

General

Today we welcomed at Tranby, Team GB wheelchair rugby athlete, Martin Norris.

Martin was born with Spina Bifida, but he didn’t let this affect him in any way; all he did at school was play football and rugby. He first got involved in wheelchair sports in college when he enrolled on a sports diploma course where Martin was introduced to Wheelchair Basketball and started playing competitively for Halifax. One day he was at a basketball game and during half time a rugby ball came on to his side of the court. Martin threw the ball back to the other side of the court and someone said to him “why don’t you come and try Wheelchair Rugby League” and he never looked back!

Shortly after getting involved in Wheelchair Rugby League, Martin was scouted and after trials, he was selected for the England squad on the 2004 French tour. Following this he joined the newly formed Wigan Warriors club. After numerous spells at other clubs over the years he is now back at Wigan.

Martin spent the day inspiring pupils in Reception – Year 10 with a fun fitness circuit in the sports hall and two assemblies for all year groups speaking about his achievements, personal challenges and resilience including a demonstration of passing the ball in a wheelchair with the help of Mr Henderson.

Thank you, Martin for an inspirational and fun morning.
